Mercury Suggestions
Helpfile MAISER.HLP should be updated

Much appreciated! I've forwarded it to David.

<p>Much appreciated! I've forwarded it to David.</p><p>/Rolf</p><p> </p>

Just sent a HELP to my MAISER on Mercury/32 V4.73 ... and got back a helptext, which seems to be the same than that from very old Mercury/NLM.

Would it be possible before publishing Mercury/32 V4.74 to bring MAISER.HLP up to date (based on help in Mercury/32, where it seems to be correct)? I know I can do it myself, but maybe it's better David does it with the update.

Possibly change the extension? HLP is used by Windows (OK old version, but doubleclick tries to open it as a windows helpfile). Example: MAISER-HELP.TXT

It might be possible to include it in Mercury 4.74, even though time is short. Would it be possible for you to suggest a new wording?

Hmm ... thought about the two points in help of Mercury/32:

  •  Using mailing lists - commands and methods
  • Other mail server commands

OK - I'll try to mix the old helpfile with the help in Mercury/32:

           |                Mail Server Help.               |
           +------------------------------------------------+

The Mercury Mail Transport includes a simple mail server capable of
performing a number of automatic operations in response to messages
sent to it. Some or all operations may be restricted at this site.

To activate the mail server, send a message to the special mail server
account at the site (usually called MAISER), with the subject of the
message set to anything (the mail server will quote your subject line
back to you in its reply), and the commands the mail server should
execute listed one per line in the message body. The mail server stops
parsing commands when it encounters a blank line or an EXIT command.
If your mailer adds a signature to your messages, make sure you enter
a blank line after the last command. Unrecognized commands are ignored
and generate no error.

The following common commands may be recognized by the mail server:

  HELP               Returns this text.
BOUNCE             Returns your message to you, headers intact.
VERIFY <address>   Determines whether the specified <address> is valid.

LOOKUP <string>    Searches the local system for user names matching
<string>. The string may contain * and ? wildcard
characters. This command may be disabled.
FINGER <address>   Returns mail specific information about a user at
the <address>. Also the content of the file PROFILE
(if it exists) in the user's mail directory will be
returned. This command may be disabled at this site.
INDEX              Asks MAISER for a list of files available by eMail
                     at this site.
SEND <filename>    Asks MAISER to send <filename>. For a list of the
files available by eMail from this site, see the
                     INDEX command.
EXIT               Stops mail server processing commandlines in the
                     message.

For mailing list management the following commands that affect list
membership or list operation are recognized by the mail server:

 Commands available to EVERYONE:

LIST                                Returns the mailing lists available
and public visible at this site.
ENUMERATE <listname>                Returns a list of current subscribers

REVIEW <listname>                of <listname>. Enumeration may be
                                      restricted to list moderators.

SUBSCRIBE <listname> [<fullname>]   Add the sender's address to
SUB <listname> [<fullname>]   <listname>. You may submit your
<fullname>. If the list is not a
public list, you will receive an
                                      error message.
UNSUBSCRIBE <listname>              Remove the sender's address from
        UNSUB <listname>              <listname>.
      SIGNOFF <listname>
STATUS <listname>                   Get your current subscription
                                      information for <listname>.

SET <listname> DIGEST               Set your list subscription to digest
                                      mode.
SET <listname> NODIGEST             Turn off digest mode for a list.
SET <listname> MAIL                 Turn on delivery from a list.
SET <listname> NOMAIL               Turn off delivery from a list.
SET <listname> VACATION X           Temporarily turn off delivery from a
                                      list for X days.
SET <listname> REPRO                Receive copies of your own postings
                                      to the list.
SET <listname> NOREPRO              No copies of your own postings to
                                      the list.

Commands only available to LIST MODERATORS (password needed):

PASSWORD <password>                     Supply the password for moderator
                                          commands

  ADD <listname> <address> [<fullname>]   Add <address> to <listname> with
                                          optional <fullname>.
  REMOVE <listname> <address>             Remove <address> from <listname>.
MSTATUS <listname> <address>            Get subscription status of
                                          <address> at <listname>.
MSET <address> <listname> <option>      Change subscription options of
                                          <address> at <listname>. <option>
                                          may be:
                                          MAIL, NOMAIL, DIGEST, NODIGEST,
                                          VACATION, REPRO, NOREPRO

If you have problems with this facility, or questions, please mail them to
"postmaster" at this site.

*uff* done! [:)] Changed some inconsistencies that were in help of Mercury/32 (replaced <user> with <address>, <list-name> with <listname>, <list> with <listname>, [Full name] to  [<fullname>]). Build a Section for common commands and changed the sorting of commands. Meanwhile thought about sending this as multipart/alternate (handled like the rules for a disclamer ... if same named file with extension .htm is available, mail will be sent as multipart/alternate), but that would result in programing and it seems there is no time anymore.

cheers    Olaf
