For the last mont or so my Spam folder (where spamhalter sends mail) has been showing as empty empty.

If I  mark a legitimate mail as spam and move it to that folder the next time I log in it is not visible.

I've checked for filters (by clicking on the icons) but there do not appear to be any active.

I have checked the folder for consistency and reindexed it and no change.

Can anyone hlep please?

Thanks for your suggestion.  It might work - however, I'm not quite sure I understand exactly how you'd copy a message from an old mailbox into a new one on a freshly installed Pegasus.  Do you knnow of a place in Pegasus which would permit me to browse for the old Mail folder containing the old mailbox?

Thank you for that. I right clicked the folder and selected folder information but there was no option to clear the cache that I could see. However I chose the Recover deleted space option from the right click menu and that appears to have fixed the problem

I had posted this and rec'd a reply with the request to add the info on the failure message. This is what they say:

reasons reported - relay host or by the local TCP/IP transport module: 553, sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed repthosts (#5.7.1)

This is saying that you are trying to relay off this host and this is not allowed. If this is your ISPs relay host that is sending this message you need to talk to the ISP.

I'm not sure what that means but I have called the recipients of the emails and made sure they had my new e-mail address in their book and then tried it again, always with the same return failure message. I had to switch back to Outlook Express in order to get some work done but would really like to get back to using Pegasus.

Thanks.

Hi,

This is from the Windows Live Hotmail website's help pages. It's instructions for Outlook, but it should work for Pmail. Note that the pop3 port is 995, smtp port is 25 but BOTH ports still need ssl enabled. I haven't tested this myself (don't have an Hotmail account), but it should work.

  1. In Outlook Express, click the Tools menu, and then click Accounts.
  2. Click Add, and then click Mail.
  3. Type your name, and then click Next.
  4. Type your full Windows Live Hotmail e-mail address, and then click Next.
  5. Enter the following information, and then click Next:

    • In the My incoming mail server is a box, click POP3.
    • In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server box, type pop3.live.com.
    • In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type smtp.live.com

  6. Type the account name and the password for your Windows Live Hotmail account. Clear the Remember password check box unless you're the only person with access to the computer. Make sure that the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box isn't selected.
  7. Click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. In the Internet Accounts window, click the Mail tab, click the Windows Live Hotmail account that you added, and then click Properties.
  9. Click the Advanced tab, and under Server Port Numbers, enter the following information, and then click OK:

    • In the Incoming mail (POP3) box, type 995.
    • In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box, type 25.
    • Under both Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming mail (POP3), select the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box.
Excellent.  Thanks for the info. It does work with pop3.live.com as the server name and the port set to 995,  but it is necessary to disable certificate validation (security tab) as well as setting SSL.

Thanks, again for the help.

Yes, surely stability comes before features.  A program that randomly crashes should be considered unstable.

I would love graphics, etc. but not at the expense of crashes and restarts.

1.  Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info to locate the HOME mail
    directory.

2.  Use File Manager or Explorer and go to this directory and
delete the zero length PMO, PMX and PMW files.

The Mnemonic ids are a great way to access certain important functions in PM. However, what I feel is missing is an option to access all the functions as well as settings and a combination of settings and functions, and then attach this process to an icon in order to streamline the work process. This could be done with a small macro recorder which records a series of clicks and keystrokes and then allows to save the macro and attached it to an icon (or key stroke). I use this in other applications to streamline often cumbersome repetitive processes and find it extremely helpful and flexible as it suit exactly my needs. Any thoughts on this?

Hi Thomas MS,

Sounds like you ar in desperate need of . It's a bit out of the scope of this forum, but I'll spend a few words on it if I may. AutoIt has become one of my most important tools. It is a script language to automate Windows. It's a very versatile tool in my experience. For instance it can handle system calls, windows, key presses, and even mouse movements and clicks. In short: it simulates YOU (if you program it right, haha) and thus works cross programs like you do. It creates an .exe file which runs independant of AutoIt. It comes with several tools among which is a recorder. Of course AutoIt is not the only one, there are a few other tools like this, but AutoIt is the one I am familiar with.

Now read back ".... which records a series of clicks and keystrokes and then allows to save the macro ...." and do your maths: one plus one equals two, isn't it?

I hate exploring new worlds if I only need something to be done. But take the time to get acquinted to AutoIt and thou shall be rewarded fairly [:)]

Oh yeah,  ".... and attached it to an icon (or key stroke)". Well, that problem can be solved by the runexe extension (now we're talking Pegasus again) which puts a button on the toolbar to (as the name suggests) run an exe. I can't reproduce where I found it and the makers site is down, but I can post a copy here if you wish (Thomas R. Stephenson: any sugestions on how to?). From runexe's license.txt: "This program is freeware. It may be used by any number of users on any number of systems, for private or commercial use, without fee or obligation."

Regards,
Henk-Sjoerd
Thanks Henk-Sjoerd,

I did not have much time lately in order to dig into AutoIt (http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/) or other solutions so I only had a quick glance at it. With some efforts it will probably do the trick and it looks very powerful to me. Thank for the hint!

However, I feel that it might be a bit of an 'overkill' [;)] for what I need it to do. I feel that many problems or requests for certain solutions, raised here on the forum, could be solved by introducing a macro recorder and macro capability into PM! As many tasks would be done only within PM no cross application macro language would be needed and the entire thing could be made much simpler also for the normal user. I feel that a macro recorder which may record clicks, and keystrokes (with an option of course for those who prefer to write scrips by hand) in combination with a more user friendly way of adding icons and functionality to toolbars (e.g. right mouse click and adding a saved macro to an icon selected from a list, etc.) and creating own toolbars which could be easily view and hidden again depending on the work you are doing, would be a major improvement!

Just imagine, anything you normally have to do with 20 and more clicks etc. could be in the reach of one click and reverted again to default with another and the nice thing would be that you basically could access ALL functions and combinations as well as menu items there are and not only a selection as in the Mnemonic list!

Has anyone ever seriously looked into or considered this option(s)? I could imagine that there are packages around wich could be intergrated.

Cheers

Thomas

There are many reasons why an email may not be delivered, and most of them have nothing to do with what mail client you are using.

The delivery failure messages you are receiving should contain the reason why the mail was not delivered.

If you can provide some more information (copies of the various failure messages would be a good start) then the reason for these failures could be narrowed down a bit.

I would suspect it is being put there by your ISP (or before).

You could turn on diagnostic logging to check the actual data being downloaded to be sure.

To increase the speed of step 1 I moved the program to my hard drive first.

The

empty original folder still consists this data error after step 2. Now

I would blindly go to step 4 if the original folders name was not

Main.pmm. Is this fact insignificant and will I proceed the next 12

years without Main.pmm? Or can I simply rename the filename of the new

folder to Main.pmm?

Not that big a deal anymore.  It is one of the unique folders though and renaming the PMM and PMI files might make it easier for you to work with the folders.  I keep an older version of PMail around that will enable me to rename the file.  ;-)

After more than 12 years of updating

versions, I'm afraid I already have a quite untypical and maybe messy

setup (i.e. no 'Program' folder I keep reading about on this forum). So

I'm a little sensitive about this kind of changes. In fact my next

topic on this forum was going to be how I can install a clean version

4.52 and later add my settings and data to this new install instead of

installing over the old version.

I personally believe this is a waste of time.  I've had PMail installed in the c"\pmail directory since I was running PMail for MSDOS in the early 90's.  I have never done anything but install the new version over the old.  When I updated the computer I just copied from the old hard drives and actually never do a new install except for testing.  ;-)  I also have PMail 3.5x, WinPMail v2.5x, 3.x, 4.41 and v4.5 all pointing at the same mailbox directories so I can test out and support older versions as well.  I do use the -Y <filename> commandline option so that older WinPMail versions do not mess up my v4.5 PMail.ini.  ;-)
Ok, it was hard for me but I did it. Main folder is gone... Maybe I will even install 4.52 over this version... Again... ;)

Thanks for solving the issue!

This suggestion didn't do the trick, but it did point me in the right direction.  I will need to copy a few folders, but I've got my new mail folder back.

Not sure what you mean.  You said you were missing the new mail folder in the folder listing.  Were you missing other folders as well? If so you probably have a bad hierarch.pm as well.

Thank you for your help.

Many thanks; that worked a treat.

I didn't find these Content Control values; are they buried in Spamhalter somewhere?

Thanks

Use Tools |  Spam and Content control | Content control and edit the Content control file you are using.  Go to "Message tests" and set a limit in "Check at most this many bytes in each message

If you enter a value greater than zero here, Pegasus Mail will only scan that many characters in each message when applying your content control rule set. This can reduce the time taken to perform content control, but can also result in less undesirable mail being detected. If you find that Content Control is taking a significant amount of time on your system (for instance, if you receive many large messages), entering a value of around 8000 in here will typically provide a good balance between speed and detection.

Note that when scanning multipart messages, Pegasus Mail adds together the size of each text section it scans to calculate the number of bytes it has scanned - it does not simply blindly read through the file
.
Personally I would recommend using something like 4000 rather then the recommended 8000 so you do not get into scanning the encoded attachments.
Nevertheless, whatever the settings for the OS could be, Pmail should save the files as they are, not make them unusable.

This also includes respecting the names of the attachments, imho.

PMail does not control this.  Years back it did when David actually wrote the file management process and when the OS's changed it caused major problems.  Everyone said they would rather have the OS do this.  As a result he went to simply doing a windows call and passing the file operations off to the OS so that  it did not matter what OS was being used.  The real problem is that MS Windows defaults to not showing the extensions when it knows what they are and then not adding the extension when saving the file.
Some others have had this problem with both KAV and KIS.We think we have found the solution.
