PMail Hangs when using RQUOTES

Would it help to send the PMS file(s) that I have to see if it is in the files, if there is a way to send them?  I'll experiment to see if I can find a root cause.

I have been using PMail for many years and today attempted to use the RQuotes variable signature feature.  I was able to successfully compile the RSC file and then copy it to my mail folder as a PMS file.  If I edit the Signature to include a ~! where I would like the quote, when it attempts to add the signature, PMAIL hangs.  If I check Task Manager, it is running full CPU resource and does not stop until I Stop the Process.  I left it for nearly 5 minutes the second time.  I then tried to use the default RQUOTES.R and created the RSC and PMS from that.  Same issue.  If I remove the file, program works fine.  If I remove the ~! from sig, it works fine.  Add both back in and it hangs.  I have tried this on both a C Drive install and my Windows shared network install with the same results.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had this problem also when setting up Plato which, I think, is essentially the same thing you're trying to do.  The only way the quote feature worked without hanging was to use the quote only in plain content.  If I tried to add the quote in formatted content with the "add varient at message creation" box checked, pmail would hang as soon as I opened a new message.

You are correct.  That is the problem.  The only way that I found to work around it was:

  • Edit the signature to include the quote for variant: Internet address, plain content
  • Select "Add this variant of the default signature upon message creation"
  • Select Variant: Internet address, plain content

Other combinations cause Pegasus to hang.  Not sure if David and his team are aware of this or not.

Thanks for the help,

Stephen

I can't reproduce this one here, sorry. I'm not quite sure what to suggest.

Cheers!

Hello!

What one may have to pay attention to is that "rescom.exe" uses (DOS-)codepage 850.

I have been told that Notepad does not provide that codepage, so creating "rquotes.r" within Notepad would cause the high-bitted characters in the file to be encoded wrongly (and perhaps cause other unexpected results as well). In order to prevent that, you should create / edit "rquotes.exe" with a DOS-editor (like Edit [that you can open in a DOS-window under Windows]).

(As I have never used any variable signatures, I can only tell what others told me. That is why I am not sure whether this really helps. : -( )

Tried that and no-go.  Behaviour is exactly the same as it was with using notepad.  I have had text issues in the past which turned out to be video incompatibilities.  This rescom thing is pretty ancient from what I understand and it just may not be handled properly by certain video setups. It works good enough for me so I guess I'm gonna live with it.  It doesn't hang if I uncheck the "add variant on message creation" check box, OR if that is checked I am in "internet plain content".

Thanks for your reply

I have even tried this with the default rquotes.r file that is in the Resource directory with the same result.  When I used that file, I did not modify it at all.
